DR DAVID VAN VELDEN, MB ChB, MPraxMed, MPhil (Journalism),
is a lecturer and researcher at the Faculty of Health Sciences, Stellenbosch University. He is interested in integrative medicine, a healing-orientated medicine that takes account of the whole person (body, mind and spirit), including all aspects of lifestyle. Emphasising the therapeutic relationship between doctor and patient, he promotes the use of all appropriate therapies, both conventional and alternative, in an evidence-based approach. He is a researcher and the author and co-author of numerous published opinions and scientific articles on the health benefits of moderate intake of wine as part of a healthy lifestyle, and has appeared as a public health spokesman on many TV and radio programmes. He recently qualified as a scientific journalist and is responsible for a regular health column in a leading South African magazine.
